What is Graphic Design?

Defining “design”

If you look up the term graphic design, you'll see a definition similar to something like: “the art or skill of combining text and pictures in advertisements, magazines, or books.” Now, that's partially right, but what's missing?

“Graphic design is the process of visual communication and problem-solving through the use of typography, photography, and illustration.”

Well, sort of… but what else? “Graphic designers create visual concepts, using computer software or by hand, to communicate ideas that inspire, inform, and captivate consumers. They develop the overall layout and production design for various applications such as advertisements, brochures, magazines, and corporate reports.”

Right there we had three definitions and they all explained design in different ways, but to us, design is a way of thinking. It's a thought process. It's something that you need to be passionate about in order to fully understand. The foundation of design revolves back to understanding the basic concepts of what it is that needs to be communicated- whether that be a business strategy, a brand, a message, or something else. Then evaluate that concept, find ways to improve it - make it stand out from similar ideas. And finally form solutions to visually communicate those ideas in a unique and creative way.

Designers are problem solvers. Creators. Revolutionary decision makers. Visual communicators. Design is more than just a pretty picture - its is everything around us.

The importance of design

Great design stands out and can influence people’s choices, both deliberately and subconsciously, all while setting your brand apart from your competition. By nature, people like to associate with things that look good and make them feel good. By investing in quality graphic design, you are significantly increasing your brand’s ability to stand out in the minds of key decision makers.

Graphic design enhances communication with viewers and consumers. It serves as a functional way to convey your ideas in a way that is not only effective, but also beautiful. People form initial opinions in a matter of seconds and great design allows you to make a positive first impression. Aesthetically pleasing, professionally designed graphics will cause other people to form positive opinions about your product, service or brand. Good design makes you look good. It’s that simple.
